How We Treat

Healthy Mind and Brain Center is a biofeedback clinic that uses multiple approaches to treating our clients:

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback, also called EEG Biofeedback is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive, drugless method for teaching the brain to function in a more balanced and healthful way. We use a simple and pleasant learning modality that can help shift the way the brain produces and distributes its electrical energy.

Neurofeedback therapy takes abnormal brainwave patterns and makes them normal. We accomplish this by connecting the individual to a computer using wires and sensors and measuring and correcting brain wave patterns.

Neurofeedback treats many conditions such as PTSD, stress, anxiety, depression, autism spectrum, insomnia, tics disorder, Parkinson’s, memory loss, hearing disorders, attention, migraines and pain.

How can one therapy treat so many conditions?

Because all of these conditions have one thing in common, dysregulation in specific brain wave patterns. By correcting the dysregulation in the brain waves, neurofeedback also corrects the condition that is associated with the dysregulation.

What is the goal of neurofeedback?

The goal of neurofeedback is to transform an unhealthy dysregulated brainwave pattern into a normal healthy organized pattern.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

HMBC teaches our clients the foundations of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is a form of therapy that works to change thoughts, emotions and behaviors, and has proven success in treating a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, marital and communication problems, alcohol, drug use and severe mental illness.

Our clients learn the CBT triangle, self-monitoring and a host of other techniques that can be used in the real world. HMBC and clients set S.M.A.R.T goals which means goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely. Once a client completes the recommended

12-24 sessions of CBT, they will have the necessary skills to counsel themselves and get through future mental health issues on their own.

Psychoeducation

Psychoeducation refers to interventions that aim to give clients knowledge about his or her condition. Learning is critical to the change process and the maintenance of desirable behaviors.

An evidenced-based approach dictates that for debilitating mental health conditions, a combined modality approach that blends therapy with education remains, by far, the best treatment in terms of outcome and eventual prognosis.

Healthy Mind & Brain Center aims to offer the most effective treatment available, and in doing so has created multiple learning platforms for our clients. It is through learning that maladaptive behaviors are formed, and through learning that maladaptive behaviors are resolved.

Mindfulness Stress Reduction

At its core, MSR is training in mindfulness, which Kabat-Zinn has defined as “the awareness that arises by paying attention on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally. Clients who participate in our MSR online courses learn valuable knowledge and skills in how to live in the present moment, regulate their emotions and gain control over their minds.

Meditation

Using meditation as treatment has helped hundreds of thousands of people around the globe recover from illness, resolve emotional conflicts and reach their optimal potential in mind, body, and spirit.

Teaching meditation techniques, as an alternative and supplemental treatment approach, is an integral part of what we do here at HMBC.

When you meditate, your rational thought processes, housed in your cortex, begin a quiet dialogue with your brain’s emotional centers, the hippocampus and amygdala, both of which are in your limbic system. When your cortex and limbic system agree that it is appropriate to relax, they relay the message to the hypo- thalamus, which connects the brain to the endocrine system.

This releases a flood of calming neurotransmitters and hormones, which soothe the entire body. The immune system then secretes its own molecules of information, some of which re- turn to the brain, helping to complete this circuitry of healing. You shift into a re- laxed alpha brain wave pattern, and your nervous system is dominated by the inhibitory parasympathetic branch.

When the parasympathetic nervous system is favored, you send relatively more nerve signals to your organs and glands of immunity, such as your thymus. As this occurs, you reach the ideal condition for healing.

HMBC teaches our clients mindfulness meditation, which aims to help with issues related to focus, attention, concentration, anxiety, high blood pressure, migraines and a host of other mental and physical conditions.

Nutrition

Nutrition is an essential part of a healthy mind and brain, especially when receiving neurofeedback services. Stability of the brain is the essence of strength and mobility. Toxins which stem from fatigue and stress can weaken the brains neural pathways and lead to poor metabolic functioning. Having a well-balanced diet promotes optimal functioning of the mind and brain and provides nourishment to the body. Our nutrition care approach will be provided to all of our clients and is highly recommended that it is followed.
